Sail GP Halifax: The Extreme Race Experience | SaltWire #racing #sailing #catamaranStarting this year, all income assistance payments will be indexed annually based on the consumer price index. In 2024-25, rates will increase by 2.5 per cent.
Vince Calderhead, a human rights lawyer, called today’s announcement a good start. Indexation means that the grossly inadequate rates won’t get any worse, said Calderhead. "Even with rate indexation, a single person who is ‘boarding’ will be receiving 31 per cent of the Official Poverty Line, a single person without disabilities will receive 35 per cent, a single parent with a child, 58 per cent, and a two-parent family, 63 per cent of the poverty line.
He said what's required is for the province to commit to a three-year plan to bring rates up to Canada’s official poverty line. The New Democrats have been pushing for rates to be tied to inflation. Party leader Claudia Chender called the move a step towards correcting damage caused by the government’s decision to freeze rates for the past two year. She called the timing of announcement bizarre, coming the day after the debate on the budget concluded.
