HALIFAX, N.S. — Nova Scotians looking to add secondary or backyard suites to their properties now have access to more financial support and expanded eligibility criteria.

The loan — which covers up to 50 per cent of eligible costs or $40,000, whichever is less — can be used for various expenses including construction materials, labour, permits or purchasing prefabricated backyard suites.Feds spending more than $9 million on homes in Kings and Lunenburg County"These changes will help more people build affordable homes for people who need them."

Under the affordability stream of the program, homeowners can charge a maximum of 80 per cent of the average market rent and rent to individuals below the household income limit, regardless of whether they are family members.
