The threat is broader, however, as the flies feed on over 70 plant and tree species, depleting their sugar supply and causing ruined or mealy fruit in crops such as grapes and apples.

It won’t only be grapes that will be affected if it does make its way to Nova Scotia.” He said knowing it could be coming to Nova Scotia gives growers and Agriculture Canada time to prepare and find ways to combat the fly.“They’re learning the control methods, but it can be pretty devastating, for sure, if it gets out of control.” It's another case of climate change helping pests move into areas they haven’t normally been found, Ells said.
