The Fighting Irish moved back up in this week's poll after beating USC Saturday night

Notre Dame made an upward move in this week’s US LBM AFCA Coaches Poll. The Fighting Irish moved up three spots to No. 18 this week after Saturday’s 48-20 win over former No. 10 Southern Cal. The Trojans were the fourth of a stretch of four consecutive ranked teams for the Irish. They fell seven spots to No. 16 after their first loss of the season.

Georgia remained No. 1 after a 37-20 win over Vanderbilt. Michigan, Ohio State and Florida State stayed in the 2-4 spots behind the two-time defending national champions after they all won lopsided games. The Bulldogs received 58 first-place votes, while Michigan garnered four. Ohio State and Oklahoma each took one first-place vote.

Washington joined the top 5 this week, moving up a spot, after Saturday’s win over Oregon. The Ducks fell from No. 8 to 11 after the loss. Penn State dropped a spot to No. 6. Oklahoma was idle this week and remained No. 7. Texas and Alabama share the No. 8 spot after moving up three and two spots, respectively. North Carolina also joined the top 10 after beating Miami 41-31.

No. 3 Ohio State is the highest ranked of any of Notre Dame’s opponents this season. Duke, which the Irish beat two weeks ago, checks-in one spot ahead of the Irish at No. 17. Louisville, which beat the Irish last week but lost to unranked Pittsburgh on Saturday, is No. 21. There are no other Irish opponents in this week’s poll.

Washington State, Kentucky and Kansas all fell out of this week’s top-25 after losses on Saturday. No. 22 Air Force, No. 23 Iowa and No. 24 Tulane all joined the poll this week.Become a premium Irish Breakdown member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and our premium message board!
