Boosting the membership roll is part of a city council-approved plan to save the local Y, but the July 15 deadline to reach 2,400 members is fast approaching

The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA says a recent open house and membership registration event was a big success — but the charity says it still needs an additional 800 memberships to be taken out by July 15 to "ensure its future stability".

As SooToday previously reported, some city councillors have expressed concern about whether the local YMCA is doing enough to attract the necessary members to save the struggling facility. But in order for the plan to work, the YMCA had to grow its membership list to approximately 2,400 — proof that it could remain sustainable in the long-term. "This surge in support is a significant step forward as the YMCA navigates through a crucial period, striving to secure the organization's long-term viability," the release says. "Despite this positive momentum, the YMCA still needs to see an additional 800 memberships by July 15 to ensure its future stability.

"We were pleased to see hundreds of Saultites take the opportunity to visit the YMCA, take a tour, and learn about the important role that YMCA plays in the community,” says Don Ferguson, public relations manager for the organization. Despite this positive momentum, the YMCA still needs to see an additional 800 memberships by July 15 to ensure its future stability.
