The partnership is the first phase of the creation of a new Mental Health Research and Training Institute in Sault Ste. Marie
NOSM University, formerly the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, has formed a partnership with Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie to address mental health and addictions challenges. The agreement will lead to the creation of a new training and research facility at the Algoma campus.
The announcement was made at the Algoma campus in the Sault on Wednesday morning. It was also presented online through the NOSM YouTube channel. Algoma and NOSM University have committed to establishing a strategy between the two universities that respond to community needs related to mental health and addiction, said the release. This will happen through focused research, medical education and training programs at the undergraduate and graduate level.
"The agreement provides an opportunity for our faculty and researchers to collaborate directly with NOSM University to further advance the establishment of a Mental Health and Addictions Research and Training Institute at Algoma aimed at improving care for patients, families, and communities while enhancing interdisciplinary mental illness education and training programs,” Vezina said.
