Eight people are facing a total of 40 charges resulting from a police investigation into the forgery of artwork by Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau.

Androgyny by Norval Morrisseau, right, is shown in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa in 2017. Police said Friday they've uncovered more than 1,000 fraudulent works passed off as Morrisseau originals.

The Thunder Bay Police Service in northwestern Ontario began the investigation in 2020 and later brought in Ontario Provincial Police due to the magnitude of the investigation, the TBPS told CBC News. Five of the accused are from Thunder Bay.
