Northwestern Ontario MPP Proposes Permanent Daylight Saving Time
Ontario, Manitoba, Permanent Daylight Saving Time

Ontario MPP Sol Mamakwa says most residents who responded to his office survey support switching northwestern Ontario to permanent daylight saving time to align with Manitoba. The change could reduce scheduling disruptions for flights and health care appointments in communities near the Manitoba border. Fort Frances has also surveyed residents about the proposal.

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says a survey run by his office shows most respondents would like to see Ontario switch to permanent daylight savings time to align with Manitoba. A section of Northwestern Ontario could turn into an "island of central time" if it doesn't switch to permanent daylight savings time like the province of Manitoba, the MPP for the Kiiwetinoong riding said.

MPP Sol Mamakwa said the change could create problems with scheduling things like flights or health care appointments for people who live in northwestern Ontario, especially in the most western areas of the region, which share a time zone with Manitoba. Mamakwa said his office conducted a survey about the issue, asking if Kiiwetinoong should adopt permanent daylight savings time like Manitoba.

He said 1,085 people responded to the survey, with 91 per cent of those saying they're in favour of the switch.

"It's important that we listen to the voices and the perspectives of the people living in northwestern Ontario," Mamakwa said. Mamakwa said he's been in contact with Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford about the issue, as well as touching base with the office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Attorney General Doug Downey. The municipality of Fort Frances, meanwhile, has also run its own survey about a potential time change.

"We were caught off guard by Manitoba's announcement," Fort Frances Mayor Andrew Hallikas said. "There wasn't any warning. All of a sudden we learned from the news that Manitoba was going to stay permanently on daylight savings time.

" "That did cause some consternation locally and throughout the region, because if Manitoba stayed on daylight savings time and we just continued as we normally did and didn't adapt, then we would be on different time from both Manitoba and Thunder Bay. "Doug Lawrance: Manitoba Time Change "The responses were overwhelming, overwhelmingly in favour of staying with Manitoba," he said.

"Ninety-two per cent of those surveyed said that they would prefer to remain permanently on daylight savings time, five per cent said they'd like to remain permanently on standard time. " Three per cent of respondents, he said, would prefer to keep the current system, switching between daylight savings time and standard time. Fort Frances council has passed a resolution supporting switching to permanent daylight savings time, if the majority of northwestern Ontario municipalities and First Nations also do.

In that case, a bylaw to permanently adopt daylight savings time will be brought to council at a future meeting. Kris Ketonen is a reporter with CBC Thunder Bay. Send story ideas to kris.ketonen@cbc.ca.
