Jonathan Joseph Copeland, 28, of Fort Shawnee, which is near Lima, is charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding law-enforcement officers with a dangerous weapon and interfering with a law-enforcement officer during a civil disorder.
The U.S. Justice Department says Jonathan Joseph Copeland, 28, of Fort Shawnee, Ohio, can be seen in this image from video taken during the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Northwest Ohio man was arrested Thursday and is facing multiple federal charges after authorities say he clashed with law-enforcement officers during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Court documents accuse Copeland of illegally entering the Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, pushing past barricades. Authorities say he ignored commands from officers to stay back and moved to an area near the scaffolding and joined other rioters in pushing a large, metal sign into a line of police, who were trying to secure the area.
According to court documents, a person who traveled with Copeland to Washington called Copeland while he was in the Capitol and told him, “Son, you know what you’re doing is a crime.” Copeland told the FBI he then found a police officer, who helped him get out of the building threw a window.
