With taxis and public transport canceled, Pfeffer found a Facebook friend who helped secure him a ride with a married Ukrainian couple named Aleks and Marina. Aleks planned to stay and fight, but intended to drive his wife and another woman from Kyiv named Nadeshda as close as he could get them to the Polish border.
"I saw hundreds of Ukrainian men helping their wives and children get to the border before having to turn around to take up guns and defend their homeland against the invasion,"."It was horrific. Scared children, crying babies, helpless mothers who would be on their own once the husband was ordered to turn back."
