BREAKING: Northern Ireland first minister resigns over Brexit border checks
Stormont’s power-sharing arrangements and Boris Johnson’s protocol are both on the rocks into crisis and prompting calls for fresh elections.
The deal keeps Northern Ireland in the single market for goods, despite leaving the EU with the rest of the UK, meaning there doesn’t have to be a hard border with the Republic of Ireland. The DUP announced it would unilaterally stop border checks between Northern Ireland and the UK yesterday Mr Givan’s resignation makes good on months of threats to bring down the Stormont government ahead of elections in May.
The European Commission has strongly criticised the decision to end checks, saying it creates ‘further uncertainty and unpredictability’.
