The District of North Vancouver has deactivated its X account due to falling public engagement and resident complaints about the platform's content and suitability for a public institution.

The District of North Vancouver (DNV) has deactivated its account on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter , now called X. The decision follows complaints from local residents who expressed concerns about the platform's content and its suitability for a public institution. David Stuart, the district's chief administrative officer, stated that some residents used terms like 'bigoted' and 'homophobic' to describe their perception of X.

He emphasized his responsibility to understand the community's views and address their concerns. Stuart acknowledged the platform's previous value but pointed out the changing dynamics under Elon Musk's ownership. Technology expert Graye Williams echoed this sentiment, stating that it's not surprising to see cities like North Vancouver distancing themselves from X. Williams argued that the platform's evolution under Musk has rendered it less useful for public communication, comparing it to the decline of platforms like Orkut and Myspace. The DNV's decision to leave X reflects a broader trend of public institutions reassessing their presence on the platform. The City of Vancouver is currently evaluating the operational impacts of deactivating its X account, while the City of New Westminster anticipates potential changes in the near future. Surrey, however, has no immediate plans to alter its X usage. The growing discontent with X has even prompted a movement to get TransLink, the regional transportation authority, to migrate to the alternative platform BlueSky.
