Crystal Wood Carr, George Carr pulled man from burning house in 1989

Dave Stewart/The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Crystal Wood Carr will never forget the fear she felt driving to her parents’ house in North Tryon over 32 years ago and seeing flames in the distance.
Wood Carr was attending UNB in 1989 and was home for the holidays at the time of the fire on Dec. 23.Wood Carr and her father, George Wood, waded through knee-deep snow to get to Bell’s house where his tenant, Bernie Metcalfe, had already made it out. “They made a selfless choice to help when they knew there was a risk to them,’’ Perry said before presenting the awards in a brief ceremony before friends and family.Family, friends and members of the Canadian Red Cross take a group photo on Aug. 2 after Lt.-Gov. Robinson said there was no way of recognizing the selfless actions of Wood and his daughter back in 1989 but she’s been trying for the last few years to make it happen.
