North East ISD incumbents had difficult night — two ousted, one hanging on
Melinda Schwab holds up a sign for NEISD trustee Sandy Winkley outside Brook Hollow Library on Saturday. People voted on the city's bond package, two state propositions on property taxes, school board seats, bond proposals and suburban city council elections. Two of the three incumbents seeking reelection to the North East Independent School District board lost to challengers backed by a political action committee that staked out conservative positions on national culture war issues.
Diane Sciba Villarreal defeated trustee Omar Leos with 58 percent of the vote in unofficial returns to claim the District 3 seat on the board. “I’m very excited and absolutely thrilled,” Villarreal said. “We worked really hard and got out and block walked. …It was such a team effort.”With 41.5 percent of the vote, Marsha Landry in District 7 more narrowly defeated trustee Sandy Winkley, who had about 40.5 percent, with the balance, just under 18 percent, going to Joseph Trevino.
Villarreal and Landry were backed by a group called ReImagineISD, which received funding from Parents United for Freedom, a San Antonio-based political action committee whose website called for the restoration of “healthy, non-political education” in the face of “the harmful agendas being promoted.” Jacqueline Klein ran on the same slate in District 2 but fell short in her challenge of trustee Terri Williams, who won with 40.5 percent of the vote against Klein’s 38 percent. A third candidate, Rhonda Rowland, had just under 22 percent.
