Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw testified that he's 'deeply sorry' about the East Palestine, Ohio, derailment before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Thursday.
A bipartisan group of senators is pushing new rail safety standards after a series of train derailments.East Palestine, Ohio,"I want to begin today by expressing how deeply sorry I am for the impact this derailment has had on the residents of East Palestine and the surrounding communities," Shaw told the"I am determined to make this right," Shaw continued. "Norfolk Southern will clean the site safely, thoroughly and with urgency. You have my personal commitment.
Norfolk Southern President and CEO Alan Shaw to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Thursday at 10 a.m. ET. Committee on Environment and Public Works Chairman Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., to demand answers from Norfolk Southern on the East Palestine derailment. The committee will also hear from Ohio and Pennsylvania senators — Republican JD Vance and Democrats Sherrod Brown and Bob Casey — who are pushing new safety regulations called the Railway Safety Act of 2023. Other witnesses are U.S.Debra Shore, Ohio EPA Director Anne Vogel, Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission Executive Director and Chief Engineer Richard Harrison, and Beaver County Department of Emergency Services Director and Chief of Hazardous Materials Response Eric Brewer.
