REVIEW: 'Nope' is 'less of a bloody horror movie and more of a sci-fi thriller, a new summer classic reminiscent of 'Jaws' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' that will keep you on the edge of your seat and holding on to the person next to you.'
Daniel Kaluuya stars at OJ Haywood in "Nope," directed, written and produced by Jordan Peele.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Every time I come across a scary TV show flipping through the channels or whenever a trailer for a horror movie is shown in the theater, my reaction is the same.
Set in a dusty town in the mountains outside of Los Angeles, the film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as OJ and Emerald Haywood, estranged siblings trying in different ways to live up to their legacy left by their father. Otis Sr. is a legendary horse wrangler for movies and TV shows who dies under strange circumstances at the start of the film. Soon, horses start disappearing from the family ranch and the lights keep going out.
The cast elevates the proceedings to even greater heights. Oscar-winner Kaluuya is terrific as OJ, a sort of quiet everyman whose repeated utterances of “Nope!” amid nearly every scary situation make him instantly relatable. No actor does a better “oh s---!” face than him. And in the cocky and charismatic on the outside, vulnerable and compassionate on the inside Em, Palmer has finally found the role to match her talents.
