Matsuhisa opened his first eponymous restaurant in Los Angeles in 1987, and met actor Robert De Niro while he dined. The pair became friends, and by 1994, Matsuhisa teamed up with De Niro, restaurateur Drew Nieporent, and investor Meir Teper to open Nobu restaurants, with the first debuting in TriBeCa in New York City. Now the brand spans 17 locations in the United States and 30 more international outposts.
