Scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation

Nobel Committee Secretary General Thomas Perlmann speaks to the media in front of a picture of this year's laureates Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkum during the announcement of the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on October 7, 2024.A pair of U.S.

In the 1990s, the researchers were working independently on the developmental genetics of the roundworm, C. elegans, a tiny organism favoured by scientists for its simplicity. The two researchers shared key data which ultimately revealed the role that microRNAs play in determining how and when genetic information encoded in DNA is activated.

The activity of microRNAs is now understood to be a widespread and fundamental biological process, including in human cells. Their disruption is one way that cancerous tumours are able to grow. In 2008, the pair received the Canada Gairdner International Award, a prize considered to be a good predictor of future Nobelists.
