“If you can hear a keening noise as you read this, like a far-off siren, that’s just the wailing of the millions of women who recognise immediately what a truly stupid idea this is,” writes NellFrizzell.
Firstly, this is yet another example of laying responsibility in the laps of individuals rather than, oh, I don’t know, questioning decades worth of government and employer policy: cuts to early years services, housing policy that gives all the power to landlords, pay freezes and funding cuts within the National Health System that have caused a knock on shortfall of midwives and health visitors , the financial Matterhorn that is trying to buy your first home, a failure to address the gender pay...
Secondly, and I cannot believe this has to be explained, but apparently so: being child-free is not necessarily a choice. A “negative child benefit”, which taxes people without children more, will do diddly squat to increase the birth rate of people who are infertile. Or who experience recurrent. Or who have a mental or physical health condition that makes them feel unable to have children. Or who have lost a child.
