Researchers from Western University observed 210 subjects in the trauma population at an unnamed Canadian trauma centre in London, ON.

Patients were observed for 3-month periods before and after federal legalization came into force and were screened for cannabinoids as well as for amphetamines, cocaine, and opioids. The majority of patients were treated at the trauma centre due to their involvement in vehicular collisions.Article content

Researchers noted that the rate of positive cannabinoid screenings in patients with trauma was similar in the months before and after cannabis became federally legal. The authors write that “in the subgroup of patients whose mechanism of trauma was a motor vehicle collision, there was no difference in the rate of positive toxicology screen results or positive cannabinoid screen results between the two periods.”

They also note that although there was an increase in the rates of positive cannabinoid screens and positive toxicology screens post-legalization among patients withUltimately, the study’s authors concluded that there was “no difference in the rates of positive cannabinoid screen results among patients assessed at our trauma centre in the 3 months before and the 3 months after legalization of cannabis.
