Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday that there were no intelligence reports at the moment of Italy facing a direct terrorism threat after a suspected Islamist extremist killed two Swedish nationals in Brussels on Monday.
That attack follows the murder of a teacher in France last week and the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel.
"The guard had already been raised a few days ago, we are keeping everything under control," Tajanii told Rai radio. "The Carabinieri, the State Police, the Finance Police the Penitentiary Police and the intelligence services are working on prevention activities, so much so that two people accused of terrorism were arrested this morning. "But there can always be a frenzied fundamentalist acting alone, a loose canon."Prevention operations in Italy are at the maximum level, but there are no reports of imminent danger".
