NEW YORK -- José Alvarado saved the Phillies here Saturday night. The big lefty came into a bases-loaded, one-out mess in the fifth inning, pumped seven fastballs to notch two strikeouts, and set up a stirring come-from-behind victory.Alvarado entered an identical situation Sunday night -- bases filled, one out, fifth inning -- with the Phillies leading the New York Mets by one run.
Before it was over, there was a late-game flare that will be worth remembering when the Mets visit Citizens Bank Park this weekend. New York reliever Yoan Lopez hit Alec Bohm in the back in the ninth inning after Phillies reliever Cristopher Sanchez hit Francisco Lindor in the top of the inning. Mets first baseman Dom Smith, who had a few run-ins with Alvarado last season, followed with a line-drive single up the middle that scored Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso to give the Mets a 5-3 edge.Schwarber continued his assault on the Mets by taking Scherzer deep twice in his first two at-bats.
Of 1,008 players with at least 100 career plate appearances against the Mets, Schwarber ranks first with a .752 slugging percentage. Schwarber has seven homers this season, second in the National League behind Colorado’s C.J. Cron .
