EDMONTON — The Alberta Pharmacists' Association says upcoming government cuts to service compensation fees will have a big impact on pharmacists and also patient care.
Currently, pharmacists can be reimbursed $100 for undertaking that assessment. As of Nov. 1, it will be $70. Margaret Wing, chief executive officer of the pharmacists association, says she's extremely disappointed and that these cuts will not only affect pharmacists but also patients.Wing said comprehensive annual care plans are programs that pharmacists use to help patients with complex health conditions, such as diabetes, mental illness and cardiovascular disease.
Wing said the problem now is whether or not pharmacists will continue monthly followup appointments because the government is reimbursing pharmacists for four each year.Wing also said the cuts are particularly demoralizing, given the shortage of family doctors in the province in recent years has caused more Albertans to rely on pharmacists for primary medical care needs.
Nadia Kamran, a pharmacist in Edmonton, said these cuts are"the worst thing" she's seen in her career.
