World champions and No. 1 seeded Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes breezed through their first four matches without dropping a single set. But they fell behind early against Australian duo Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy and couldn’t roar back in a stunning three-set defeat .The Aussies avenged a tight two-set loss to the Canadians on home sand at the Commonwealth Games three years ago in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast.
In an earlier match, Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson couldn’t build on their controversial victory over the Americans in the Round of 16, falling to Latvians Anastasija Kravcenoka and Tina Graudina in three sets . Wilkerson struggled with errant serves all week and made a personal tournament-high 10 errors, including some demoralizing attempts that sailed long in the tiebreaker set. She made 39 service errors over the course of five matches.
“Right now, it hurts a lot,” Bansley said. “I’m disappointed in this performance. I think it will take some time to reflect and recount what we’ve accomplished. We’re so grateful to be here with Brandie and for the five years we committed together and our whole team. So much work .” Still, Canada will return home empty-handed. The country has never medaled in the women’s even at the Olympics. The lone medal on the men’s side was a bronze by John Child and Mark Heese in 1996, the first Olympic beach tournament in Atlanta.
