Western University’s Andrew Sancton said he doesn’t see any virtue in amalgamating, but the region could benefit from more shared services.

Metro Vancouver’s regional governance model functions well and is highly regarded, so there is no reason to amalgamate the region’s municipalities, according to an expert on municipal government.

The B.C. government cannot force communities to amalgamate, and two or more municipalities can only amalgamate if more than 50 per cent of the voters in each are in favour. Sancton said amalgamating on a smaller scale is a different story, and the only experts on that topic are the people in the affected communities.

Coté said amalgamation at any level is a messy discussion, and the advantages and disadvantages are not clear-cut.
