Last Updated: Jun. 11, 2024 9:07AMTony Austin says the fire department was on scene quickly after he had arrived at the house that was on fire near Taylor Beach.Stephanie Dunlop, Metchosin’s fire chief, tells CHEK News the department received the call at 6:51 and were on scene by 6:56.Tony Austin walks his dog on Taylor Beach every morning and says when he first saw the big cloud of black smoke, he thought a car was on fire in the parking lot so he ran back to check.
“We noticed that actually it was one of the houses that a little bit further along the beach that fronts onto the beach, and it was on fire,” Austin told CHEK News on the phone. “A lot of black smoke coming out from the side of the house and the deck and the part of the side of the house was on fire.”Sign up for the CHEK Now daily email newsletter to get breaking news and the day's top stories sent to your email.When he got to the house, Austin said other bystanders told him they had gone up to the house to try and yell and get the attention of anyone inside, but no one answered.
