Reached Thursday morning, Cox, who was speaking on behalf of the officer, said the officer declined to attend to the event in plainclothes because she is a police officer and identifies as such by wearing a uniform. Every other profession invited to the event would show up in uniform, said Cox.
The report from the board’s Office of the Human Rights and Equity Advisor said some students, especially those from minority groups, felt frightened and threatened by the presence of police officers at school. In her letter to Cox, Giroux said there will be some who say that the easy path forward is to allow the parent to attend in uniform while others will maintain that uniforms and police cars are not essential to classroom learning about policing.
In April 2022, Trustee Donna Blackburn introduced a motion asking the board to initiate discussions with the Ottawa Police Service to establish standards of practice for police support to schools in the absence of the SRO program.
