Classes continue to be delayed for nearly 50,000 students in the state’s largest school district, as school officials announced that there will be no school on Friday after members of the teachers’ union failed to reach an agreement with SPS.

SEATTLE — Classes continue to be delayed for nearly 50,000 students in the state’s largest school district, as school officials announced on Thursday that there will be no school on Friday after members of the teachers’ union failed to reach an agreement with Seattle Public Schools.

There have been bargaining sessions all summer long, but the contract between teachers and the district expired on Aug. 31. The Seattle Public Schools and Seattle Education Association negotiations continue and include a mediator to guide conversations. We know it is best for students, staff and families to have schools open as soon as possible,” Beverly Redmond, Assistant Superintendent of Public Affairs in a statement. “While we don’t yet have an agreement, both the district and SEA are committed to working on our shared challenges.

Consulting teacher Liz Ruiz-Puyana argues the $161 million sitting in the district’s reserve fund needs to be used. The former science teacher says pandemic dollars have not been spent either.
