COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 10: Head coach Jimbo Fisher of the Texas A&M Aggies arrives prior to facing the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Kyle Field on September 10, 2022 in College Station, Texas.COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M is playing a stairstep schedule of allegedly increasingly tougher teams to start the season. The No. 6 Aggies appeared fortunate for the setup – all the way until they inexplicably slipped on the second stair on Saturday.
The Aggies trailed 14-7 late in the third quarter following a 9-yard Appalachian State touchdown pass from Chase Brice to Henry Pearson when the Mountaineers puzzlingly kicked to dynamic A&M returner Devon Achane. The former Fort Bend Marshall star returned the kick 95 yards for a game-tying touchdown, and the Aggies sighed in relief – briefly.
A&M in addition allowed its first touchdown at Kyle Field since October of last year against South Carolina, after keeping Auburn, Prairie View A&M and Sam Houston out of the end zone. Mountaineers running back Ahmani Marshall rushed up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter in shoving Appalachian State to a 7-0 lead in the programs’ first and, in the end, quite memorable meeting.
