No. 2 Texas comes undone at MSG, suffers first loss to No. 17 Illinois in Jimmy V Classic

“There’s different kinds of steps in the journey each season,” Beard said Monday. “Certainly, first time to play in a major neutral-site game like this. We got great respect for Illinois, one of the best teams in college basketball.” Still, Texas was favored to win at MSG. And it should’ve been after a dominant start to the season that featured wins over No. 2 Gonzaga and No. 7 Creighton. But unlike the Zags and Bluejays, Illinois popped back off the mat after one of Texas’ feverish second-half flurries.
Then Texas’ offense cratered. Too much hero ball, particularly by fifth-year guard Marcus Carr, who scored nine points on 3-for-14 shooting and was rejected on a heavily contested pull-up jumper at the end of regulation. Epps hit both to knot the game at 68-68 with eight seconds left. He then blocked Carr’s last-second shot to force overtime, one of 12 Illini blocks on the night.
