The Mustangs became the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from the NIT, falling to No. 4 Washington State 75-63 in the second round. It was the Mustangs’ first home loss of the season after they had won their first 17 games at Moody Coliseum.
SMU fell in a big hole early as Washington State raced out to a 21-9 lead and took a 39-20 lead into halftime. In the first period, the Mustangs shot 32% from the floor, 14.3% from the 3-point line and attempted just four free throws. The Mustangs were outrebounded 28-11 in the first half. In a run fueled by Kendric Davis and Michael Weathers, the Mustangs cut the Washington State lead down to 50-43 with 11:36 remaining, keeping hope alive for a comeback. Davis went on a personal 6-0 run with 3:33 left to cut the deficit to 62-58.
However, a poster dunk by Efe Abogidi and a 3-pointer by Michael Flowers pushed the lead back to 69-60 with 1:45 remaining. SMU wasn’t the only No. 1 seed to be eliminated from the NIT, as No. 1 Dayton fell to No. 4 Vanderbilt 70-68 in overtime.
