Nissan will launch the Rogue e-Power hybrid in the United States in November, aiming for hybrid vehicles to very quickly account for 30% to 40% of total C-segment mid-sized car sales in that market, Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier said on Monday. The announcement was made during a media briefing at Nissan's headquarters in Yokohama, Japan.
Expanding e-Power Hybrid Offerings
Nissan has sold more than 2 million e-Power vehicles globally, but the technology has not previously been available in the US, Meunier told reporters. The e-Power system uses a gasoline engine to generate electricity for an electric motor, offering a hybrid solution without plug-in charging.
Nissan plans to bring the more compact Kicks e-Power hybrid to the US and Canada as soon as possible, Meunier said. The automaker also seeks to offer hybrid powertrains in larger SUV models and pickup trucks in the future, broadening the appeal of its electrified lineup.
The introduction of e-Power to the US market marks a significant step for Nissan, which has lagged behind some competitors in hybrid offerings. The company aims to capture a substantial share of the growing hybrid segment in the US, where demand for fuel-efficient vehicles continues to rise.
US Manufacturing Localisation Targets
Nissan is targeting 80% localisation of US manufacturing by the end of 2030, up from about 65% currently and 40% before US tariffs were imposed in early 2025, Meunier said. This move is part of efforts to mitigate the impact of tariffs and strengthen the company's US operations.
The increased localisation will involve expanding production capabilities in the US, potentially creating jobs and reducing reliance on imported components. Meunier did not provide specific details on how the target would be achieved but emphasised the importance of adapting to the changing trade environment.
Nissan's current US manufacturing footprint includes plants in Tennessee and Mississippi, which produce a range of models. The company has been investing in these facilities to support future production, including hybrid and electric vehicles.
Chinese Automakers and Future Plans
Meunier said he did not expect the US market to open to Chinese automakers over the next five years, noting that most automakers were strongly opposed to such a move because of concerns over low-priced Chinese competition. However, Nissan is preparing for the eventual arrival of Chinese automakers in the US by shortening vehicle development cycles and reducing costs, he added.
The car maker plans to launch the China-made Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid pickup in Mexico and some Latin American markets, Meunier said. This strategy allows Nissan to leverage its global production network and offer competitive products in regions where Chinese brands are already present.
Nissan's focus on hybrids and localisation comes amid a broader industry shift towards electrification. While the company has been a pioneer in electric vehicles with the Leaf, it has been slower to adopt hybrids in the US. The launch of the Rogue e-Power and the planned expansion of e-Power models aim to address this gap.
