In a now-deleted tweet, a Nike staffer offered shoes to all athletes, without obligation to wear them in the race. 👀
Nike is not alone in its use of prototypes, for what it’s worth. Given those new rules, we’ll certainly see unreleased and forthcoming models from Saucony, New Balance, and Asics on the course by their sponsored athletes. Brooks, too, will have runners in shoesWill athletes take Nike up on the offer? Undoubtedly, some will. There’s just too much buzz surrounding this shoe.
Then again, some runners who have worn the Vaporfly Next% might not want to risk trying a totally new shoe on the biggest race day of their lives. After all, one of the biggest pieces of advice we always offer runners is to “do nothing new on race day.” As Reaves’s tweet suggests and Nike confirms, however, we expect more runners are likely to pick up a pair, even if they ultimately decide against wearing them in the race.
The biggest problem, however, comes for the runners who are sponsored by competitive brands. Most likely they will stick with what got them there, perhaps because they believe fully in the footwear they’ve been provided. It must be stated that most prototypes have not been comparatively tested, andhas not received samples for analysis, so we can’t say for certain that any are faster or slower than what’s available.
When it announced the Alphafly, Nike said a limited number will be available to Nike Plus members on the day of the Olympic Marathon Trials, February 29. Pricing has not yet been announced.
