The 13-star flag has been co-opted as a symbol by white supremacist groups.
"Historically, these symbols have been used by white supremacists, both to hearken back to a time when black people were enslaved, while also painting themselves as the inheritors of the 'true' American tradition," Southern Poverty Law Center spokesperson Bob Hopkinson explained to.
That said, the abrupt cancellation of the sneaker has led to ample conservative criticism, including from Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, the latter of whom has said he will no longer support the building of a proposed Nike facility in Goodyear, Arizona. Arizona’s economy is doing just fine without Nike. We don’t need to suck up to companies that consciously denigrate our nation’s history. 8/
