Brooksby is the winner of the 2021 ATP Newcomer of the Year award after a standout season that saw him jump about 250 spots in the ATP rankings. The 21-year-old American attended Baylor before turning pro at the end of 2020. “He’s somebody that’s going to be in the top 20, the top 10 in the world very quickly,” tennis coach and commentator Brad Gilbert said. “I expect that he’ll have a deep run at the tournament.”
Dallas resident John Isner, American Reilly Opelka, former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov and SMU’s Caleb Chakravarthi were Taylor Fritz, the top-ranked American in the world at No. 22, had also previously committed to the event. Fritz is also the highest-ranked participant for this year’s tournament.Gilbert, who played in the final of the last major tennis tournament in Dallas back in 1989, said the field for the Dallas Open is “loaded” with talent.
“Dallas is a great tennis town,” Gilbert said. “I think this is going to be on the ATP calendar for a long time.”
