Union-Tribune columnist grades the Chargers after Sunday's win against the Cleveland Browns
Down 7-0 after 3 minutes, Justin Herbert overcame plenty — including one of the worst play calls in the sport’s history — and, with basically one receiver getting separation, had a cool, professional day.Austin Ekeler was caught at the 4 following a 71-yard run, and all they got was a stinking field goal. He was brilliant, rushing 16 times for 134 yards, scoring twice, once through the air. Joshua Kelley, running better than ever, easily ran in from the 5 for the first touchdown.
Tackling by the entire defense on the Browns’ first series was record-book bad. Sebastian Joseph-Day got a roughing call for tapping Jacoby “Acting School Valedictorian” Brissett, and a field goal became a TD. Christian Covington made a tremendous fourth-and-1 TFL.Horrible in coverage. Missing Joey Bosa terribly. Virtually no pass rush. Check that. No pass rush. No sacks. Khalil Mack finally had his name called on a late third-quarter TFL.
