Almost 31 months after signing a contract to become the Ottawa Redblacks’ starting quarterback, Nick Arbuckle will get that opportunity – finally.
On Saturday, with the Redblacks desperately needing to win in Edmonton, Arbuckle will replace Caleb Evans, who stepped in as Ottawa’s starter when Jeremiah Masoli was injured in the team’s fourth game of the season. It’s been a mixed bag of results. Evans was named a CFL Top Performer for leading the Redblacks to a 23-13 win over Toronto July 13. But, coming off woeful offensive performances in back-to-back thumpings, it was time to give Arbuckle a shot.
What has to change from last week’s 30-12 loss to the Elks – where Ottawa had just 196 yards passing and lost the Time of Possession battle 35:06-24:54 ? Also, how will Ottawa deal with Edmonton’s defence if the team’s scheme is again to drop nine players into coverage? The losses have stacked up; with a 1-8 record, the Redblacks are the worst team in the CFL. But Arbuckle isn’t going to get caught up in the stats or the standings.
Remarkably enough, the Redblacks have mostly kept it together through the one-win start to the season. But it’s not like there haven’t been any conflicts. Tempers were flaring both on the sidelines and in the locker room a week ago.
