In the audio, the fraudster informs the woman that her grandchild was involved in a car accident, and a subsequent search of the vehicle led to the finding of 10 pounds of marijuana. He said her grandchild, who was a passenger in the car, was taken into custody for questioning.The fraudster then tells the woman that her grandchild needs a bond to be posted to secure his release.
The scammer told the woman that the money needed to be in cash, repeating that it was refundable and that she would get it back in the form of a certified check from the federal government. "So if I go to the bank and want to take this kind of money out and they say, what are you taking it out for, what do I tell them?" she asked.
