MONCTON, N.B.—Seattle Kraken centre Shane Wright, Los Angeles defenceman Brandt Clarke and Arizona winger Dylan Guenther have already had their “Welcome to the NHL” moments.
Now they are getting welcomed back toThe three will take a break from their dream jobs to chase another goal: a gold medal at the world junior championship.
It’s fairly rare for NHL teams to part with players for this tournament, but this year Canada got three. That’s on top of the 10 players returning from this summer’s tournament, when Canada won gold in Edmonton. “We want to make sure that we’re finding the right mix of players, the right team of players. It’s not about putting together an all-star team. It’s doing our best to put together a winning product.”
Wright’s moment arrived when he played against Sidney Crosby. “He was always my favourite player, and you’re playing against him. It’s hard to describe that feeling, how to get past that and try to move on and play hockey. But that was definitely a pretty big moment, a big a realization for me.” Of the three, Wright has the most to prove. He was on this team a year ago when the world figured he would be the top pick in the June draft. But that tournament was cancelled after two games. He ended up going fourth in the draft and did not play in the summer replacement event.
