The NHL has handed down a 10-game suspension to Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson for slamming Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stutzle's head into the ice during a faceoff. The incident, which resulted in a match penalty for Hartman, is the latest in a series of disciplinary actions against the veteran player.

The NHL has suspended forward Tom Wilson for 10 games following an incident where he slammed Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stutzle 's head into the ice during a faceoff. The suspension was announced Monday night after a Zoom hearing with Wilson earlier in the day. The league's use of Zoom allowed for a suspension of six or more games. This is not Wilson's first brush with disciplinary action.

In 2018, he received a 20-game suspension for an illegal check to the head, which was later reduced to 14 games on appeal. Hartman has the right to appeal the suspension, first to Commissioner Gary Bettman and then, if he chooses, to an arbitrator jointly appointed by the league and union. This marks Hartman's fifth suspension and his fourth since 2023. According to the collective bargaining agreement, players who repeatedly violate league playing rules face increasingly severe punishments for each new violation. Hartman, 30, was initially ejected with a match penalty for roughing Stutzle late in the second period of Saturday night's game between the two teams. The NHL's Player Safety department stated that while Hartman claims he was attempting to regain his balance using Stutzle for support, they believe the fall was intentional. They argue that Hartman intentionally used his forearm and body weight to drive Stutzle's head into the ice, making the play inherently dangerous and unacceptable. As part of his 11th instance of supplemental discipline in 663 regular-season and playoff games since his debut in 2015, Wilson will forfeit $487,805 in salary
