In unveiling the NHL’s return-to-play plan Tuesday, commissioner Gary Bettman did something none of his North American-based counterparts have been able to do — paint a clear picture for fans of what the competition will look like amid the COVID-19 pandemic.That’s been badly needed for a league stuck in pause since March 12.
“We will not set dates, choose sites or begin to play until we know it is appropriate and prudent, and are approved to do,” said Bettman. The hub cities won’t be selected until a later date and 10 markets remain in the running, including Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto. The others are Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Pittsburgh.
Those eight will be represented by a placeholder in the first lottery and will see a second one conducted should any of the top-three spots be claimed by the group.
