“Obviously we’re looking for the best candidate — the person who brings a great deal of intellectual capacity to the court, and we’re also… trying to promote diversity,” Justice Minister David Lametti said of the search for the next justice.Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti drew criticism for his response to a demand to scrap the Natural Resource Transfer Act.
That’s based on the early response from cabinet ministers who spoke to the media on Tuesday, in the wake of Justice Russell Brown’s resignation, prompted by an investigation into his actions at an Arizona resort earlier this year. However, Lametti wouldn’t offer much more on what the government wants the next justice to bring to the court beyond “quality and… diversity.”
Speaking after cabinet on Tuesday, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the plan is to “quickly” start up the government’s independent advisory process for the appointment of the next justice. Since coming to power after the 2015 election, the Liberal government has filled vacancies on the court by tasking an advisory board to identify prospective candidates.
