Alex Newhook's deflection in the third period secured a 3-1 victory for the Montreal Canadiens against the Dallas Stars. Rookie goalie Jakub Dobes made 32 saves for Montreal, while Jason Robertson scored for Dallas. The Canadiens have points in 12 of their last 14 games.

Alex Newhook 's deflection broke a tie midway through the third period, propelling the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. Rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes , who has been undefeated in four starts, stopped 32 shots. Newhook 's game-winning goal stood up after a replay review confirmed that his stick was legal at the time of the deflection.

The 23-year-old Dobes, called up from Laval of the AHL following the NHL's Christmas break, has secured all four of his wins on the road against teams with winning records. Montreal's Juraj Slafkovsky and Joel Armia also contributed to the scoring, with Armia netting an empty-net goal in the final seconds. Jason Robertson scored for Dallas, snapping their season-best seven-game winning streak. Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger, whose personal six-game winning streak ended, made 21 saves. Robertson gave the Stars an early lead, capitalizing on a rebound from Evgenii Dadonov's shot just four minutes into the game. Montreal quickly responded, however, as Slafkovsky ended a 10-game goal drought. Montreal defenseman Lane Hutson recorded an assist, extending his lead among NHL rookies with 36 points. He is striving to become the second defenseman in the last 35 seasons to lead rookies in scoring, following Quinn Hughes of Vancouver in 2019-20. Dallas, meanwhile, played with five rookie forwards due to injuries to Roope Hintz (upper body), Tyler Seguin (hip), and Mason Marchment (facial fracture). Dobes made crucial saves when Dallas pulled Oettinger for an extra skater with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. The Stars, who had scored at least four goals in six of their previous nine games, struggled to generate offense in this match.
