The provincial government provides a positive update on its fiscal situation, but opposition parties argue that regular people are still facing challenges.
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The provincial government painted a mostly rosy picture of its fiscal situation on Tuesday, Oct. 31, raising the eyebrows of opposition parties , who said it isn’t so sunny for regular people.
“We've seen challenges in housing, in the housing sector. So, those are impacting all of us day to day, but I can tell you that the economy — and this is based on a good economic analysis — our economy is strong. That was balanced by an increase in expenses of $198 million, mainly due to increases negotiated in collective bargaining agreements. The province’s total household income increased slightly from the projected $30.2 billion to $31.5 billion, and retail sales were up four per cent from what was projected.
Wakeham said household incomes might be up, but he suspects household expenditures are also up significantly more, pointing to statistics around costs of essentials.
