The Rangers are focused on controllable starting pitching on the trade market, somebody who could be added to their rotation past 2023. There is some discussion about finding a controllable outfielder, but it still wouldn’t seem to make Gallo a great fit. First, Gallo is a free agent at the end of this year. The Rangers aren’t really interested in rental players. Second, the current need is for a right-handed bat, as manager Chris Woodward said this weekend. Gallo is a lefty, who is slashing .
Now, there are extenuating circumstances that could always change things. At the moment, Gallo’s poor performance in New York means he’d have very little trade value. So, whatever a team might have to give up would probably be minimal. Second, Gallo’s affinity for the Rangers and his experience in New York might make him more committed to getting a deal done to stay in Texas rather than explore the free agent market. But there really is no way for the Rangers to know that at the moment.
The Rangers are certainly on the lookout for opportunistic deals. And you can make the case that Gallo might be so refreshed by a return to Texas that the mental break alone will lift his performance. You could also make an argument, however, that the performance is what is. He’s got a long track record of all-or-nothing-performance.Will it happen: Probably very unlikely.
