New York City has halted free bus rides to immigrants, who will now have to make their way to immigrant shelters through other means.

The free bus rides had been from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to the Roosevelt Hotel, where the city has run a temporary shelter for new arrivals after crossing the southern border. Going forward, however, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will transport immigrants from the hotel to their final shelter placements, according to Kate Smart, a spokeswoman for Mayor Eric Adams. The change has been sharply criticized by Joshua Goldfein, a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society.

“The MTA buses are one of the very few contributions the governor has made to support the city in this effort," said Goldfein."The state should send more buses.” The cancellation of these free bus rides comes as New York City has been dealing with its immigrant issue for months now. The city has received multiple busloads of immigrants, with many of the buses being sent from Texas.

Besides the Big Apple, other cities that immigrant buses are sent to include Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Illinois. On Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom and officials from California and Texas wrote a letter asking the Department of Justice to investigate Florida, alleging that the state"deceived migrants into taking flights to these particular locations based on promises of jobs and shelter.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has described Newsom's calls for investigation as"absurd" and said sanctuary jurisdictions should be responsible for taking care of illegal immigrants.
