Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly said Thursday it will seek approval to add its diabetes drug to the buzzy US weight loss market after achieving promising results in a new clinical trial.
, currently approved to treat type 2 diabetes under the name Mounjaro, is taken once a week as an injection.
Those who received the highest dosage lost an average of 15.7 percent of their body weight, or 34.4 pounds , the company said, with the most common side effects being mild to moderate gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and diarrhea.it plans to complete its submission to US authorities"in the coming weeks" and expects"regulatory action as early as late 2023".
Many specialists view the GLP-1 analogues as a game-changer, as they lead to much greater weight loss than the drugs available until now.
