The new warnings are a response to feedback about a variety of safety and security concerns, such as assaults, thefts, damage to vehicles, aggressive panhandling, and more according to the airport.

On Monday, several “no trespassing” signs were posted in the departure and arrival areas that warn visitors how the airport “enforces” criminal trespassing statutes. An audio message with similar warnings is now being broadcast near the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Dedication Exhibit, in an area where public transit riders arrive at the airport.

Those spending time at the airport without “legitimate airport business purposes” must leave after an airport staffer tells them to, Goersmeyer said in emailed statement, and if they don’t, they “may be arrested and charged with criminal trespass.” Chris Knestrick, executive director of the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless, said unhoused individuals have long sought respite at the airport.
