Hamilton police chief Frank Bergin insists newer, better body-worn cameras on patrol officers could ease 'distrust with some communities.'

Matthew Bingley reports – Apr 12, 2024Improved technology and a successful run with in-car camera systems have Hamilton police revisiting the purchase of body-worn cameras at roughly $15.5 million over five years.

“Also we’re finding that, really, it’s resolving a lot of the court cases … very early on when we’re working with our Crown because you have real-time information,” Bergin said. Sgt. Scott Moore told board members technology advances over the last decade make the prospect more attractive since entire shifts can now be recorded, uploading and downloading of content is faster, and statements can be captured through audio recordings that can be transcribed by software.In all, efficiencies could reduce the time spent on calls allowing officers to engage in other urgent matters.

Officers are instructed to turn on the camera’s prior to arriving at a call for service or prior to asking any sort of question.
