Looking for the next wave of solar power in Alabama? Installers say the best place to look might be on the rooftops of churches, school and city halls.
, extends existing 30% tax credits for people who install solar and other renewable energies at their homes, but also includes a provision that allows tax-exempt organizations to receive their renewable energy tax credit as a direct payment.
Previously, if a property owner didn’t pay taxes, there was no way to claim the solar tax credit directly. Now there is. “A lot of the municipalities and universities that we have been talking to, and many that we haven’t, have all of a sudden come to the front part of the line saying, ’we want to consider this now.’”In other states, nonprofits would often use something called power-purchase agreements to get around the lack of tax incentives.
Daniel Tait -- chief operating officer of Energy Alabama, a non-profit group advocating for clean energy in the state -- said that programs included in the IRA may have greater impact in Alabama than in other states because the state because the state has not taken steps to embrace small-scale renewables as others have.
Alabama Power says the fee is necessary to prevent customers who go solar from shifting costs to other customers. The fee has been“Alabama Power provides renewable programs that allow customers of all sizes the opportunity to participate in renewable projects and programs,” Alabama Power spokesperson Alyson Tucker said via email.
